Obtaining your NIE Number
The NIE Number (Numero de Iidentificacion de Extranjero) is a foreigner’s tax identification number and is needed in Spain to do any of the following:
- Buy, Sell or Insure a Property
- Apply for a Mortgage
- Open a Bank Account
- To register on the Padron (Local Census in the Townhall)
- To register at the Medical Centre
- To Pay Taxes
- To Buy a Car
- To Register with Social Security
- To Start a Business
- For Employment
- To Apply for a Diving License
Any resident or non-resident foreigner with financial affairs in Spain MUST HAVE AN NIE NUMBER. The process of application is extremely easy, usually obtained with a legal representative or translator. The application can be made at any police station that has a foreigner’s department, or Officina de Extranjeros, in Spanish. Documents Required for your Application
A completed ‘Application Form’ (Solicitud de Numero de Identificacion de Extranjero y Certificadoes – Form EX-15)
A Stamped Receipt from the Bank with the Payment of Fees (Form: Tasa modelo 790 Código 012)
Your Original Passport or an Identity Card and a Photocopy
Two Passport Photographs
